As Avaya Spaces makes its worldwide debut, I’m told, it’s to keep gaining new features to accommodate a constantly shifting remote workforce. Sumedh Ganpate, Senior Collaboration Practice Leader, Avaya International, told me, the latest version of Avaya Spaces is “Slicker, smarter, and more secure.” I wanted to find out how, so we sat down for an exclusive interview.
Ganpate said it would be an understatement to say that technologies like virtual collaboration and communications tech have played a crucial role in helping us through these challenging times. Such tools have already enabled doctors to diagnose patients from afar and allowed us to remain in contact with family members, friends, as well as in the workplace.
“Digital collaboration platforms have helped us maintain a semblance of normality during these trying times”
During the COVID-19 period, Avaya made its Spaces offering free for schools, non-profits, and commercial organizations. The company even had to accelerate the roll-out of the offering across the globe. And I’m told, Avaya Spaces witnessed a 2,500 increase in user adoption because of essential integrations with Salesforce, Office 365, G-Suite, and Slack.
In the coming months, Ganpate added, many parts of our lives will return to some sort of ‘normality,’ but what we can all agree on is that the pandemic has irreversibly changed the way we work, which is why the company made what it calls necessary upgrades to the platform.
The all-new Avaya Spaces is optimized for mobile experiences and features a fresh user interface as well as other updates that make the solution more intuitive. According to Ganpate, the new ‘Spaces’ is more secure, too. “With our latest update, we’ve made further enhancements to the security of meetings in ‘Spaces.’ You can now set passwords to protect Spaces, and go a step further with our new ‘Private Space’ setting.”
This feature ensures only admins and meeting attendees can join Spaces and meetings in progress. Smart Mute, another useful feature, and it’s for any organization in need of a space for 15 participants or more. When this is the case, Spaces enters auto-mute mode, to avoid everyone talking at once. “We’ve also enabled users to join meetings with cameras and mics blocked by default.”

For enterprises in need of massive meeting spaces, Spaces now extends support for up to 500 meeting participants. For more manageable sums of meeting-goers, Spaces has an all-new 34+1 ‘party grid view.’ Avaya Spaces also supports the full range of Avaya’s XT and CU360 video devices, so users can continue leveraging Avaya hardware they previously purchased.
Likely one of the biggest boosts to the newly-designed Avaya Spaces is the ability to record meetings for compliance purposes. According to Ganpate, every ‘Power’ user now can today take advantage of secured meeting recordings, with unlimited storage. Avaya Spaces is available as part of the company’s full communication and collaboration suite for communication and collaboration and is accessible in more than 60 countries so far. To gain access to this and more, you’ll have to subscribe to one of Avaya’s flexible subscription-based plans on a monthly or annual payment basis, however.
