Zoom has agreed to pay $85m and improve its security as part of a class-action lawsuit.
Zoom, which has denied any wrongdoing, is accused of sharing personal data with third parties such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Google, as well as letting hackers ‘zoombomb’ meetings.
Subscribers to the lawsuit could be awarded refunds of either 15 percent of what they paid for Zoom services or $25, whichever is higher.
The settlement still needs to be signed off by the case’s judge.
Zoom also agreed to implement improved security measures, such as alerting users when meeting participants use third-party apps in meetings, and also to provide specialist training to employees on how to handle personal data.
The lawsuit was first filed in March last year, as the usage of Zoom’s platform exploded amid the pandemic.
The plaintiff’s lawyers called the settlement fair but will also seek $21.25m in legal fees, Reuters reported.
In a statement on Sunday, Zoom said: “The privacy and security of our users are top priorities for Zoom, and we take seriously the trust our users place in us.”
