Slack has revealed a host of platform updates at its parent company’s Dreamforce event.

The innovations come across a range of areas including asynchronous collaboration; inter-business communication; and security and compliance.

The Slack announcements come as it shares the stage Salesforce’s flagship event, following the closing of the former’s acquisition by the latter in July.

Last month, the CEOs of both companies gave a glimpse at their vision for the future – to create what they referred to as a digital HQ for businesses, which has been elaborated on with the latest news.

Announcing the latest updates, Slack CEO, Stuart Butterfield, said: “Building your digital HQ means thinking carefully about the digital infrastructure that connects everyone in your business, helping them find new ways to innovate, collaborate and stay connected.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity for every company to reinvent themselves and make work more flexible, inclusive and productive. There could not be a more exciting time for Salesforce and Slack to come together to help every company find success in this new digital-first world”

We’ve rounded up the most important information here.

Asynchronous Communication

The build-out of asynchronous communication is a popular trend in the collaboration market, and Slack has now revealed its hand with the introduction of clips.

Slack clips

Clips lets users instantly record videos, audio messages and screenshares that can be sent to other users in the channel for them to view at a convenient time. Slack says this reduces the struggles of trying to match up multiple employees’ calendars to arrange time to meet in a live meeting.

The clips are made more accessible by features such as different viewing speeds, live captions and the ability to download transcripts.

Recordings are archived in Slack with searchable transcripts. The clips can also be sent to people outside of an organisation via Slack Connect.

Enhancements to Slack Connect

Slack Connect lets users communicate with people outside of their organisation, with CEO Stuart Butterfield recently claiming the feature has seen ‘exceptional growth’ since launching in 2020.

Slack has often positioned Slack Connect as being a more secure alternative to email, citing research that claims $12bn is lost in business email scams every year.

The latest Slack Connect news is relevant for customers of Slack’s Enterprise Grid – which is a Slack platform tailored for large or complex enterprises with up to 500,000 employees.

These businesses will now be able to speak to employees in other businesses that are not already paying Slack customers (which has been a prerequisite for using Slack Connect until now).

This feature is set to launch for Enterprise Grid customers in the Autumn.

Public sector-focused Slack offering

Slack introduced a vertical-specific version of its platform, designed specifically for the US public sector world.

GovSlack has all the functionality of the standard Slack app but runs in a certified cloud environment, making it compliant with the strict security and operational requirements of the Federal Government.

Slack said that GovSlack will launch in 2022.

The Slack platform has already been authorised by FedRAMP, which gives government agencies peace of mind when looking to adopt cloud-based products.
