RingCentral has launched functionality that lets users turn encryption on and off during video meetings.

Dynamic end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is an extension of the security features RingCentral introduced last year.

E2EE sees all content encrypted at the endpoint and decrypted at the other end, with even the platform provider unable to view it. The downside here is that the provider cannot provide additional features, such as live transcription and call recording.

Dynamic E2EE means users can turn the added security on for parts of a call, and also turn it off when it’s not needed to benefit from other tools.

RingCentral said the feature will be useful when a conversation unexpectedly turns to include sensitive data, for example healthcare information about a patient.

Heather Hinton, Chief Information Security Officer, at RingCentral, said: “Dynamic E2EE adds another layer of security to video meetings, giving the host the ability to turn on/off end-to-end encryption at any point in a meeting.

“For example, participants can turn on D-E2EE in the middle of a meeting to discuss confidential information, and turn off D-E2EE when they’re finished.

“This gives everyone in the meeting extra assurance that only participants inside can access the information”

Dynamics E2EE is available across RingCentral’s desktop and mobile applications, as well as the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers. Users can use it in both 1:1 meetings and larger conferences.

The feature can be found in the ‘More’ section in the menu panel of meetings – with a green shield appearing when it has been turned on.

RingCentral recently announced its latest UC alliance, which comes in the form of a partnership with Vodafone for Business.
