Poly has shared its global workplace research at Enterprise Connect 2022, which found 52% of employers think hybrid working is only temporary.
Unsurprisingly, therefore, 52% of organisations also admitted being unprepared for hybrid working.
These attitudes are in stark opposition, with 80% of employees believing they should have the right to flexible work, work from home renewals taking place globally, and more.
The audio and video endpoint vendor, Poly, stated in its summary of the report:
“Organisations that want to drive growth must accept a simple fact – hybrid working is here to stay.”
A Microsoft survey quoted in the report uncovered a similar disconnect between employer and employee perspectives.
Poly’s study, Recruit, Retain, and Grow, aimed to get insights into organisations’ preparedness for the future. It drew its statistics from 2,528 business leaders worldwide between December 2021 and February 2022.
Here are some other notable findings which came out of Poly’s research.
Recruitment and Retention
“Ultimately, providing a rich and flexible work environment, where people have the tools and support needed to be effective, will give organisations the best chance of success in a competitive market. Employers must focus their resources on positioning themselves as an attractive destination for top talent, rather than managing situations where staff are becoming demotivated and moving on.” – Poly Report
- 56% of organisations believe that they will lose staff if they do not make hybrid work plans.
Why did employees leave?
- 19% of employees discovered better-suited jobs (19%)
- Employees did not get the desired flexibility of hybrid working (16%)
Strategy and Equality
“Our Evolution of the Workplace report found visits to the office will become purpose‐driven: attending a meeting, brainstorming, collaborating and having access to appropriate technology. If such trends around occupancy and usage continue, and space is no longer used to capacity, the office as we know it today will need to evolve.” – Poly Report
- 24% of the American and APAC employers and 17% of EMEA employers are asking their employees to return to the office full-time.
- 84% of employees are being given a set number of days they must be in the office.
Culture and Workforce Wellness
“Clearly, organisations are caught between knowing that performance can be improved by hybrid working and fearing their people will burn out. When you consider that workload is one of the top reasons for people leaving their jobs, this is brought into even greater focus. The key will be to engage with employees to set expectations and monitor well‐being to ensure a good work‐life balance and provide ongoing training for how best to manage their time when working remotely.” – Poly Report
- 72% of companies increased productivity because of hybrid work, with a global increase of 27%.
- 62%, 61% and 56% of APAC, EMEA and American organisations believe employees won’t build vital relationships for their career progression if they are not in the office.
- 49% of employers believe there is a culture of overworking.
- 49% of employers are not taking measures to help employees who feel the need to be always-on.
Equality, Experience and Evolution
“You must turn to thinking about people, spaces and technology to create a great, equal experience for staff. Doing so will help improve their ability to recruit and retain talent, enable growth and provide the flexibility needed to adapt for any future work‐from‐home orders.” – Poly Report
- 64% view technology and experiences as the face of the company.
- 92% are investing in cloud applications and collaboration software equally. Headsets, cameras, and speakerphones are being purchased by 89%, 86% and 83% (respectively) of organisations.
- 77% of companies are redesigning their office to include more open plan areas, quiet zones, collaboration spaces, and socialising areas.
