With healthcare organizations faced with tightening budgets and mounting staff shortages, facilities are increasingly turning to unified communications in search of increased efficiency, productivity and security. Enterprise mobility solutions are having a tangible impact on clinicians who are able to spend less time logging information or switching devices, and more time tending to patients.

Edward Baird, Vice President Sales North America at Spectralink Corporation said: “Clear, reliable communication among care team members improves care coordination and reduces the potential for error. Voice quality, for example, is a key differentiator between positive patient outcomes and not.” Spectralink’s suite of healthcare mobile solutions is specifically designed for busy hospital environments. Its enterprise-grade rugged handsets, including DECT and Versity Smartphones, are powered with Spectralink Voice Quality Optimization, VQO, to ensure that clinicians have the clarity they need to keep their patients healthy. Moreover, durability means that devices can be frequently sterilized without being compromised.

Previously, some hospitals had prevented staff from taking mobile devices into restricted areas such as wards or pharmacies. This was done to avoid the risk of patients inappropriately accessing confidential information. Spectralink’s mobile devices can be put into “lockdown” mode while not in use, allowing staff to carry them in case of an emergency. Indeed, emergencies are common for healthcare professionals: up to 90% of emergency department nurses have experienced physical violence at some point in their careers.

Spectralink SAFE provides healthcare professionals with critical alarms and information on a single handset. Baird added:

Solutions such as integrated alarm systems and man down alerts are essential as healthcare environments become more dangerous – the right tools can give healthcare professionals the peace of mind they need to carry out their critical work”

The World Health Organization has advocated for a 50% reduction of harmful medication measures in 2022, but hospitals are understaffed, and existing staff are under extreme pressure. Indeed, an average 12-hour day shift will require a nurse to walk about five miles. Between visiting the pharmacy, checking doses and updating clinical records, unsupported medical staff can have a significant proportion of their day taken up by travel time and administrative tasks.

Spectralink’s UCaas for healthcare environments includes features such as automated adherence to mandatory clinical workflows and interoperability with leading platforms and medical applications. This allows staff to confirm medications and access, update and share electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical information without leaving the patient’s side.

Spectralink’s offering is interoperable by design, which is crucial for budget constrained healthcare facilities looking to avoid costly transition processes. Baird explained: “Many devices in the market require extensive configuration to interoperate with existing business platforms. This is where interoperability comes to the rescue with flexible solutions that are scalable and future-proof, allowing for seamless transition to leading platforms and uptake of new and emerging medical applications.”

As new technologies, treatments and data sources redefine the way healthcare is delivered, unified communications technology is becoming increasingly key to improving patient outcomes. Spectralink’s clinical mobility solutions ensure that patients receive the highest level of care through heightened productivity, security and access to resource for medical staff.
