Teams apps have been made available in Outlook and Office.com for users enrolled in the Targeted Release program.

Microsoft announced a new Teams SDK that allows developers to create Microsoft Teams apps that extend Teams to Office, Outlook, and other parts of Microsoft 365.

The rollout to users in the Targeted Release program marks the first wave of developers to be given access to its new software.

Microsoft has released information about enhancements to some of its apps, such as Power BI, and its partnerships with Mural, Zoho and other ISVs to build apps using this devkit.

In a blog post, Microsoft said: “Today, we are making the first group of these Teams apps available in Preview for Outlook and Office.com for users enrolled in the Targeted Release program.

“With this enhancement, apps built for Teams not only run everywhere Teams runs, but also in more of the places that users spend their time in Microsoft 365, like Outlook and Office.com.”

The practical implications for users will be seeing Teams applications appearing in Outlook and Office.com.

From an admin perspective, the Targeted Release program will allow them to manage the enhanced Teams apps and user access from the Team admin centre, using the usual admin controls for Teams apps.

As Microsoft explains: “Previously, for an app to work in Teams, Outlook, and Office, you needed to manage each app independently.

“With the enhanced Teams apps, you now need to manage it only once, and enable a single, connected experience for end-users across Teams, Outlook, and Office.com.”

There will be no changes in permissions or app data access.

Microsoft has promised to implement more admin controls in the Microsoft 365 admin centre.

The updated email client, Microsoft One Outlook, is also expected to be released soon for Windows Insider members in the Dev and Beta channels.
