Tech Redundancies hit TalkDesk

Talkdesk is the latest tech firm to make a round of layoffs amid challenging economic conditions.

Social media is awash with posts from former employees revealing they’ve been affected, with the majority appearing to be based in the US.

The roles of laid-off staff range from customer success and channel managers to solutions engineering.

One affected employee contacted UC Today, claiming that as much as 20 percent of Talkdesk’s workforce could be impacted, but this figure has not been confirmed. Talkdesk has been contacted for comment.

Many of the posts on LinkedIn paint Talkdesk as a good place to work and praise the company for the way it has handled the layoffs.

Talkdesk has around 2,000 employees in 19 countries, according to its website. The firm was valued at $10bn after its Series D funding round in 2021, which took its total raise to $498m.

In 2021, the firm took its first steps into the unified communications space by launching what it claimed to be “the industry’s first and only business phone system natively built on a cloud contact centre platform”. The launch expanded it out of its native contact space.

In a UC Trends session for UC Summit, Talkdesk CEO Tiago Paiva spoke at length about the efforts Talkdesk made to encourage its staff.

He said: “We’ve done a great job being able to motivate people to keep pushing people to do their best work and be their best selves. That’s something that we work on every single day.”

Other tech industry layoffs today include 2000 workers expected to be laid off by global payment facilitators PayPal and 500 workers due to go from Boston-based HubSpot. Both announced the figures represent seven per cent of each of the respective workforces.

Google, via its parent company Alphabet, also this week announced job cuts totalling 12,000, while Microsoft recently revealed 10,000 cuts during a ‘challenging time’.

Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, said: “It’s important to note that while we are eliminating roles in some areas, we will continue to hire in key strategic areas. We know this is a challenging time for each person impacted. The senior leadership team and I are committed that as we go through this process, we will do so in the most thoughtful and transparent way possible.”
