Apple to Release New Video Conferencing Features for Mac

Apple will release new video conferencing features in the upcoming macOS to enhance meetings across all platforms.

macOS Sonoma will include Presenter Overlay, which lets users place themselves on top of content such as slideshows. They’ll have the option of appearing as a small bubble or in a larger frame.

The feature works by removing the participant from their background and placing the content behind them.

“macOS is the heart of the Mac, and with Sonoma, we’re making it even more delightful and productive to use,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering.

“We think users are going to love macOS Sonoma and the new ways it enables them to personalise with widgets and stunning new screen savers, see new levels of gaming performance, and gain powerful productivity for video conferencing and browsing with Safari.”

Elsewhere, users will also have Reactions, such as adding virtual balloons or confetti to their windows in a call. These are styled the same as in Messages.

The reactions will be triggered by hand movements, such as two thumbs up, creating a firework display behind the user.

These features are not confined to FaceTime. Users can enable them across any video conferencing platform, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Webex.

Immersive Collaboration with Vision Pro

The highlight of Apple’s WWDC conference was the launch of its long-awaited mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro.

Apple demonstrated the device’s consumer-focused features but also unveiled a host of business-focused tools, such as video calling, screen sharing, and collaboration on documents.

Apple also revealed new features for the iPhone, which mean it can be turned into a meeting room camera when paired with an Apple TV device.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said: Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing.

“Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before — with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of groundbreaking innovations. It unlocks incredible experiences for our users and exciting new opportunities for our developers.”
