Now generally available, Nuance’s DAX Copliot uses conversational, ambient, and generative AI to assist healthcare workers.

Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot, previously called DAX Express, serves as an AI copilot for automated clinical documentation, helping physicians streamline medical documentation creation.

As a result, the solution enhances clinical efficiency, alleviates burnout, and frees up time, allowing doctors to dedicate more time to improving patient care.

Diana Nole, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Healthcare at Nuance, a Microsoft company, spoke about the need for copilots in healthcare: “Healthcare is one of the most significant areas of potential for copilots given the tremendous administrative burden placed on clinicians and other medical staff.

Taking a responsible approach to AI that centres around unparalleled collaboration with the world’s top AI researchers and access to a trusted infrastructure and global platform, Nuance is arming healthcare providers with a trusted copilot that enables them with more time to take care of their patients.”

Nuance points to a report by Morgan Stanley that predicts AI spending in healthcare will increase to 10.5 percent in 2024. In the U.S., health systems are turning to AI solutions to improve efficiency and reduce clinician burnout.

It also cited a Medscape survey, which found that the number of physicians reporting symptoms of burnout grew to 53 percent in 2023, compared to 42 percent in 2018.

In seconds, DAX Copilot can securely generate clinical summaries of telehealth or exam room conversations for physicians to review and enter into the electronic health record (EHR) system.

DAX Copilot works in conjunction with Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare and leverages Nuance’s conversational and ambient AI with the latest generative AI model.

Nuance has been developing AI healthcare solutions, which hundreds of thousands of clinicians have used over the past decades. It believes it has been at the centre of conversational and ambient AI innovations in healthcare for years, particularly with Dragon Medical One and now DAX.

Dragon Medical One has been Best in KLAS for three consecutive years, acting as a workflow assistant and documentation companion. It has been used by over 550,000 users around the world and offers clinicians the ability to capture patient stories using their voices, easily intuitively navigate clinical systems, and access information related to patient care.

The Nuance Dragon family, which includes DAX Coplit, has been deployed by hundreds of healthcare organisations, resulting in 70 percent reduced burnout, 50 percent less time working on documentation, seven minutes saved for each interaction, and five appointments added for each clinic day.

According to Nuance, clinicians using DAX Copilot in a private preview have reported, “It has helped them achieve a better work-life balance, higher job satisfaction, more focused, personable, and conversational patient visits, and reduced feelings of burnout and cognitive load.”

A survey of clinicians using DAX Copilot found that nearly three-quarters had a better experience providing care, with 96 percent saying it is easy to use.

Microsoft acquired Nuance for $19.7 billion in 2021 to boost its presence in the healthcare space. It was Microsoft’s second-largest takeover bid behind the $26.2 billion takeover of LinkedIn in 2016.

The tech giant launched its own copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, earlier in the year, which was designed to increase the productivity of Microsoft 365 users.
