It’s a dynamic as old as time itself — increased demand for a product or service will encourage an increase in supply.

The rise of hybrid work has facilitated greater demand for digital workplace solutions that create seamless experiences for both in-office and remote employees, which has naturally been the catalyst for the UC and collaboration boom.

With the growth in hybrid work, however, ensuring cybersecurity is critical. Digital workplace solutions are increasingly integrating advanced security features like multi-factor authentication, encryption, and secure VPNs to protect sensitive data. These are essential for not only data leak prevention itself, but also compliance, which is only becoming stricter as regulatory bodies adapt to the new normal of hybrid work in parallel to businesses and their hybrid work mandates.

“It’s all about information and data and securing those,” Phey Rusalian, Program Manager at Cuckoo, told UC Today at October’s UX Expo in London.

“From my perspective, I understand the regulations and standards that you have to comply towards. So, for example, for payment card information, VTI, Ofcom regulations, and information retention rules, with seven years for accounting data. You have to really understand all of that to make sure it’s appropriate in how you store that information and comply with those regulations.”

Rusalian noted that while cybersecurity in the hybrid working era is a significant issue, tools and applications have been developed accordingly to address such concerns and prevent data loss within an organisation.

These tools can “ensure you effectively know where your data is and where it’s going”, Rusalian said. “People emailing confidential information out, you can capture all that nowadays by some of the tools that a lot of the vendors utilise to flag any sensitive confidential information being leaked from the organisation. You have to make sure it’s flagged quickly and that you can prevent significant leakage from happening.”

Overseeing the deployment of digital workplace solutions naturally presents challenges, with Rusalian underlining the epochal change ushered in by Covid-19. “From my perspective, obviously, it was quite a significant change. A lot of people went from day-to-day office work to suddenly having to spend all of their time at home.”

While emerging technologies supported that transition, Rusalian highlighted that “it’s been quite a steep learning curve for people”.

“As long as you had friendly operators who were there to support the individuals who were maybe not quite so tech-savvy and didn’t quite understand the toolset, you then allowed them to carry on doing their jobs,” Rusalian added.

“One of the objectives of any change is to ensure adoption is had and is actually completed successfully. If you don’t get people to adopt the change, then there’s really no point in having the change in the first place, so make sure there’s a good plan in place to make sure that adoption is wholly included within the organisation.”
