Zoom has added support for Apple TV to its ‘Zoom – for Home TV’ application.
The app was released without any fanfare, appearing recently on the tvOS App Store.
Zoom for Home TV is listed separately on the Apple App Store to the iOS and iPadOS apps and works with second-generation Apple TV 4K models or newer.
By enabling its meeting app for use on Apple TV, Zoom will increase the exposure and accessibility of its video conferencing platform. Customers will have another easy way to use Zoom, whether it is in the office or at home, for work or catching up with friends and family.
Zoom provides a description of its Zoom – for Home TV app on the Apple app store: “With Zoom, you are one click away from video meetings with gallery views and screen sharing. Connect with anyone on other devices, Windows or Mac computers, mobile phones and tablets, Zoom Rooms, traditional conference room systems, and telephones.
“It’s super easy! Once you install the Zoom app and sign in with your Zoom user account, you’ll be able to start or join Zoom meetings.”
Key Features of Zoom – for Home TV
Zoom lists the key features of Zoom – for Home TV as follows:
- Easily start and join Zoom Meetings with one click from your device
- HD video and audio means crystal clear communications
- Calendar integration keeps you on schedule
- Easily invite friends or colleagues via phone, email, or Zoom contacts
- View in-meeting chat
- Ability to be assigned to a breakout room
In essence, users will be able to perform all the major actions they would expect, such as initiating and joining calls, utilising in-meeting chat, breakout rooms, calendar integrations, and more.
From a privacy standpoint, Zoom may collect data from you, such as your contact information, user content, usage data, and diagnostics information. However, it says this data will not be linked to your identity, which should, in theory, mean your personal and business data remain between you and your selected meeting participants.
App Requirements
Before you arrange any meetings that rely on the app, be aware that it requires a ‘Continuity Camera’ from a compatible iPhone or iPad, which is hardware that not Apple TV users will have.
The Continuity Camera was released with iOS 17 earlier this year, so you will need to have an iPhone or iPad with this feature to act as your webcam, plus a stand or MagSafe attachment to keep it in the right position.
In September, Apple rolled out an update to its operating system, which allowed Apple TV 4K users to launch video conferencing calls via FaceTime.
The update, initially announced at June’s Worldwide Developer Conference, also relies upon the use of a Continuity Camera and is powered by Centre Stage, Apple’s AI technology, that dynamically frames users as they interact with the Apple TV to create an immersive and captivating video conferencing experience.
Zoom has also been busy adding its app to other platforms, including Zoom Rooms and Tesla in-car touchscreen, as well as interoperability with Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.
