Zoom Aims To Boost Meeting Engagement With Smart Name Tags

Zoom has announced the addition of AI-powered smart name tags intended to enhance meeting engagement and inclusivity.

Now, in its public beta for Zoom Rooms, these tags utilise AI to assign name tags to individuals in a Zoom Room automatically. This feature aims to elevate the virtual meeting experience by allowing remote participants to identify who is present in the room, fostering a more connected and seamless interaction.

Admins must enable the feature through the settings to utilise smart name tags. Individual users can then enrol and provide consent via their profile, allowing their name tag to be automatically displayed in the Zoom Room’s video feed. These name tags can also be edited if necessary.

More Specifics On Features

Zoom cites one key benefit of smart name tags, which is enhanced inclusivity. With this feature, meeting participants can straightforwardly see the names of each in-room attendee, whether they are speaking or not. This aims to make virtual communication more personal and inclusive, helping both remote and in-person attendees feel more connected. It aspires to break down the barriers that often exist in meetings with dispersed teams.

Another advantage is that smart name tags are AI-powered. These automatic tags utilise AI to distinguish participants in a Zoom Room. Users have the option to manually add their name tags during a meeting or enrol for automatic recognition. This ensures that everyone in the meeting is seen, identified, and engaged in the conversation.

Finally, smart name tags improve meeting dynamics. These tags encourage a more engaging and collaborative environment by clearly identifying who is present in a meeting. Zoom stresses that this idea is particularly beneficial when teams are meeting for the first time or when meetings include external parties, as it supports participants’ rapid connection and collaboration.

What Else Has Zoom Been Up To In August?

Last week, Zoom celebrated AI’s impact across its portfolio in its latest earnings call at “no additional cost” while calling out “other vendors who have to charge the customer a lot”.

In the Q2 FY24 earnings call, Zoom’s CEO, Eric Yuan, emphasised the integration of AI Companion features throughout the company’s collaboration services, including the newly introduced Workplace solution and Zoom Contact Center. A significant part of Zoom’s AI Companion offering is that it is available at “no additional cost” to customers with paid Zoom licenses—a policy that will persist into the 2.0 phase. Yuan made a point of distinguishing Zoom from competitors who impose charges for AI features.

“I want to share with you that our customers really like Zoom AI Companion,” Yuan said in response to a Q&A question about AI Companion’s most common usage. First of all, it works so well. Second, it is at no additional cost, not like some other vendors who have to charge the customer a lot.”

Zoom began the month by announcing the availability of Zoom Docs, its new AI-powered collaborative docs solution.

Powered by the company’s generative AI assistant, Zoom AI Companion, Zoom Docs enhances collaboration within Zoom Workplace by extracting information from Zoom meetings and converting it into the most relevant and useful formats. This feature is designed to streamline access to critical information, improving the overall collaboration experience.

Meanwhile, two weeks ago, Zoom announced that its Webinars can now host up to one million attendees.

Zoom has broadened its webinar offerings by introducing a variety of single-event packages tailored for larger audiences. These new packages enable customers to host webinars with capacities ranging from 10,000 to up to one million attendees. Each package also includes support from Zoom’s Event Services team, ensuring hosts can provide a polished and engaging experience for their audience.
