Riga Circus has just reopened with new audio solutions by K-array and KGEAR to support performances.

The “oldest” fixed circus in Europe, located in Riga, Latvia, has undergone a technological transformation, which sought to improve its audio systems without compromising the historic integrity of the venue.
The project was managed by local integrators RJK, assisted by technology distributor Tet A Tek and architectural company NRJA.
According to an article by K-array, the collective aim was to create a versatile, energy-efficient space that could host various performances.
Rudolfs Busmanis, Project Manager for Business Development at Tet A Tek, discussed some of the benefits of integrating K-array’s audio systems: “The modernised Riga Circus is a multi-purpose space and needed versatile audio support.”
“The portable system allows for easy reconfiguration depending on the stage’s location, with cabling running through the centre of the venue to provide power flexibility.”
“The technology within the products coupled with K-array’s expertise enabled us to overcome the issues inherent in the structure.”
Busmanis concluded:
The K-array system has surpassed our expectations. With K-array at its core, the Riga Circus is poised to continue captivating audiences for generations to come.”
K-array’s Mugello-KH2
The circus introduced a 360-degree audio coverage system and a portable system using K-array’s Mugello-KH2,
The lightweight self-powered speaker, which K-array’s website has labelled as “discontinued”, is the smaller line array element in the K-array Mugello Series.
It comes with two eight-inch neodymium magnet woofers, each with a 2.5” voice coil, two compression drivers with a 2.5” voice coil, and a four-channel Class-D amplifier module.
K-array’s product page for the Mugello-KH2 goes on to explain that its Slim Array Technology enables an improved impulse response and ensures a “unique cardioid polar pattern” for the complete frequency range.
Electronic Beam Steering technology also gives the Mugello-KH2 the power to change the dispersion of sound beams to aim the sound field accurately.
KGEAR’s GH12
As a fixed installation solution, KGEARS’s GH12 loudspeakers were selected and organised into clusters in order to effectively fill the circus’ “unique” spherical shape.
KGEAR describes the GH12 as a “high-efficiency” speaker with “exceptional” sound quality and coverage, housed within a compact and weather-resistant package, which makes it “perfect” for indoor and outdoor applications, such as live events, theme parks, clubs, auditoriums, and transportation facilities.
The KGEAR GH12 is powered by K-array’s Kommander amplifiers, which are then managed by the K-Framework software.
K-array remarked that the system has performed well in spite of the inherent challenges of the building’s round design.
Both systems were chosen for their energy efficiency features. The Mugello system, for example, can be easily moved by one person, which therefore reduces the number of staff required to reposition it at any one time.
Meanwhile, the K-array and KGEAR solutions are able to turn electrical energy into sound, reducing operating costs.
Moreover, the KGEAR system’s flexibility allows for varying usage depending on the size of an event, thereby preventing unnecessary energy wastage.
