Google has released new updates to its Google Workspace platform based on insights from machine learning.

The company says it has been using AI for some years to improve user experience, and these latest changes are designed to improve hybrid working tools.

Updates include built-in summaries to Spaces, automated meeting transcription and summarisation, portrait restore, portrait light, and others.

Johanna Voolich Wright, Vice President, Product Management, Google Workspace, said: “We hear from customers—and observe in many of our own teams—that staying on top of the vast amount of information flowing across desks and devices can be a challenge.

“Information overload isn’t a new phenomenon, but many of our customers say that hybrid work has increased the sheer volume of emails, chats, and meetings for their organisations.

“Our latest AI innovations are designed to help employees bring focus to what matters, collaborate securely, and strengthen human connections across the ways and places work happens.”

Built-in summaries to Spaces: Built-in summaries will soon be added to Spaces to provide an easy-to-read snippet of conversations which may have been missed.

Automated meeting transcription and summarisation: Automated meeting transcriptions are being released later in the year on Google Meet to increase participation levels. They will enable attendees to refer back to discussions and let those who missed a meeting easily catch up. Meeting summarisations will be introduced next year.

Portrait restore: Portrait restore enhances video quality using Google’s AI by resolving issues caused by poor network connectivity, low quality and low light webcams. The restoration process works automatically from the cloud and does not affect the device’s performance.

Portrait light: Using machine learning, portrait light simulates studio-quality lighting onto a video feed. Users can also access control to tweak the light position and brightness.

De-reverberation: De-reverberation filters out echoes from hard surfaces in any room to improve the audio quality.

Live sharing: Live sharing in Google Meet synchronises media and content across participants to make meetings more interactive. Controls are shareable amongst participants who can interact during the meeting, sharing videos from YouTube, a playlist, and more. Partners and developers can utilise live sharing APIs to integrate Meet into their apps.

Phishing and malware protections: Later this year, Google will scale the phishing and malware protections that guard Gmail to Google Slides, Docs, and Sheets. Although Gmail blocks more than 99.9% of spam and phishing messages, its machine learning insights have identified new attack patterns and entry points. Google says there has been a trend toward attackers targeting shared docs, hence these latest security updates.

The last batch of updates to Google Workspace included privacy enhancements through end-to-end and client-side encryption on Google Meet.

Google Workspace is a collection of business tools and productivity apps such as Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Sheets, and more.

Beginning as Google Apps in 2006, Google Workspace then rebranded to G Suite in 2016 and became Google Workspace a few years later.

Last year, Google Workspace Essentials was released as a cloud plan for business users, focusing on communication and collaboration tools.
