Microsoft will showcase new Teams solutions to support healthcare workers at HIMSS23.

At the HIMSS Global Health Conference and Exhibition, Microsoft will demonstrate a range of innovations devised for improving productivity and streamlining the workflows of healthcare staff. These features include a Virtual Appointments app, a tailored Teams homepage with centralized access for frontline workers, and enabling shared use of Android devices across frontline teams.

Nicole Herskiwitz, VP at Microsoft Teams, wrote:

Frontline workers are irreplaceable, and as clinicians face record levels of burnout and high patient expectations, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams are building solutions to help balance quality patient care with quality self-care—all within one ecosystem.”

An Array of Healthcare-Friendly Innovations

The Virtual Appointments in Teams app is now generally available, streamlining and personalizing clinicians’ workflows so they can focus on the end-to-end appointment experience. This includes sending text reminders to patients and enabling them to join custom-branded virtual appointments without downloading Teams. Another feature is appointment queues, which help manage scheduled and on-demand appointments in one location.

Teams’ electronic health record (EHR) connector can be integrated with Cerner and Epic systems so staff can launch virtual care meetings over Teams through their organization’s EHR system. This also allows flexibility for patients to join virtual appointments through their browser, Teams app, SMS or patient-provider portal. Teams is also integrated with the enterprise virtual care platform Teladoc Health Solo, which allows clinicians to collaborate more efficiently on administrative and virtual care tasks.

Microsoft also promises the capacity to build a configurable out-of-the-box product or a custom-built application, depending on the organization’s requirements.

Another feature intending to enhance care team collaboration is Teams’ pre-configured home experience, which will become generally available later this month. This is essentially a central hub within Teams for an organization’s staff. It follows the Viva Connections solution, which launched earlier this year, unifying the UI for workers across desktops, mobile and tablets.

Launching later this year will be a feature allowing healthcare organizations to leverage Teams as their calling solution, meaning they can make and receive calls as a team through shared Android phones.

Microsoft Promoting Teams’ Security and Compliance Safeguards

Microsoft also highlights how it can protect against potential security breaches for healthcare organizations through its pre-integrated identity, endpoint management, and security solutions for Teams. While Android devices can currently access Teams securely via Microsoft Intune, the option for iOS devices to do so is currently in preview mode.

“This week at the HIMSS Global Health Conference and Exhibition (HIMSS23),” Herskiwitz added, “we’re thrilled to be showcasing tailored frontline solutions designed to transform patient care with virtual visits, empower care team collaboration, streamline the clinician experience, and strengthen security and compliance.”

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare is a long-running package for healthcare workers, including Teams UCaaS, Microsoft 365, Azure and Dynamics. These new features affirm Microsoft’s commitment to innovating new solutions for streamlining processes for healthcare workers.
