Microsoft has announced that Teams’ function of translating live captions during meetings will be added to mobile devices later his year.

Currently only available on PCs and Macs, the live caption translation service will be introduced to Android and iOS users. In practice, this means that when mobile users start up a meeting,, they can choose live captions in the language of their choice. The new feature will be exclusive to Teams Premium.

As outlined on the official Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Microsoft promise the addition will make “for a more inclusive meeting experience”. Although the Roadmap says the solution is still in development, it is scheduled to launch in August.

Microsoft Continue Expanding Their Translation Services

The addition continues Microsoft’s building out of Teams’ translation capabilities across different solutions, o to adapt to the needs of multinational organizations spanning different continents and languages.

Last year Microsoft launched their Teams Premium licence with live caption translations for meetings via desktop as a cornerstone feature. Microsoft also collaborated with the Welsh Government for live human translation services for Teams, which meant a professional among a network of interpreters could dial into meetings upon request.

In 2022 Microsoft also announced its intelligent message translation for Teams chat on mobile devices. This enabled iOS and Android users to translate a chat message into their preferred language, with M. Microsoft statedped these services would foster better collaboration between users who speak different native languages.

Nick Hedderman, Senior Director of the Modern Work Business Group at Microsoft, outlined the overarching  ambition behind Microsoft’s translation capabilities project after the announcement of its collaboration with the Welsh government:

Microsoft Teams brings people closer together, enabling them to communicate and collaborate while breaking down barriers around language and location. By empowering people to choose how they participate in calls and meetings, organisations can create a truly inclusive experience for everyone.”

These functions were made possible by Microsoft’s Cognitive Service Speech Translation Capabilities, part of the business’s Azure cloud platform.

Microsoft Expanding Into AI and BYOD in 2023

As well as bolstering their translation capabilities, Microsoft has also announced a number of AI and BYOD-centric solutions recently. They partnered with Siemens to produce a generative AI-powered app, Teamcenter, which is integrated with Teams and Azure OpenAI Service’s Language Model to enhance productivity and innovation for industrial firms.

Microsoft’s AI-powered customer support solution, Copilot, was also launched last month, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella describing the service as “the most powerful productivity tool on the planet.”

Microsoft also announced its partnership with Crestron at Enterprise Connect 2023. The collaboration resulted in the AirMedia Connect dongle as a BYOD solution, breaking from Microsoft’s traditionally native-focused stance on the BYOD debate.
