RingCentral Launches Subscription Service for Handsets

RingCentral is giving customers the ability to purchase hardware phones as part of a monthly subscription service.

Previously, the company required the full purchase amount in advance for expensive hardware.

Having “pioneered” Device-as-a-Service (DaaS) in November 2022, hardware phones now join the likes of headsets and video hardware with the option of a subscription service.

Harish Gaur, AVP, Product Marketing for Strategic Partnerships at RingCentral, made the announcement on RingCentral’s blog: “Today, we are expanding our DaaS portfolio to include Phone Hardware.

“Whether you call it Hardware-As-A-Service (HaaS), Device-As-A-Service(DaaS) or any other moniker, the idea is simple – Enjoy RingCentral certified desk and conference phones at a budget-friendly subscription service.”

Benefits of DaaS

RingCentral lists some of the benefits of DaaS as having tech support included, lower costs, a simplified tech stack, reduced IT workload, better employee experiences, and improved lifecycle management.

Beyond this, however, Gaur believes there are more tempting reasons for choosing DaaS phones versus one-time purchases, including a “no questions asked” hardware upgrade after 18 months.

RingCentral will also provide end-to-end management, such as managing phone servicing recovery of inoperable phones, and more.

Moreover, compared to rentals, DaaS pricing is 10-15 percent cheaper.

Benefits of RingCentral’s Desk Phones

DaaS may sound like an appealing option, but you first need to decide whether you want the hardware it relates to.

For this reason, Gaur sets out four key advantages of using desk phones with RingCentral MVP, which are functionality, flexibility, reliability, and ease of use.

  1. In terms of functionality, you can direct and manage calls using the keypad and dedicated buttons, which enables calls to be held, transferred, muted, and put on speakerphone.
You can use RingCentral features, like flip, park, and call record. Finally, the head-up display (HUD) feature can be used to monitor the availability and status of colleagues, as well as manage multiple calls at the same time.
  2. Flexibility options include using the hot desking feature to log in to a shared desk phone and unlock the features that fully personalise it, including access to your personal extension, saved settings, and voicemail. This is particularly in demand among remote workers, co-working spaces, and shared offices.
  3. RingCentral’s desk phones offer reliability through high-quality VoIP calls from your desk phone with a power supply and stable internet connection.
Desk phones can also be used as a backup device in case your computer or mobile phone has low or no battery or stops working for some other reason.
  4. Yealink and Poly desk phones with colour touch screens provide ease of use via a clear and intuitive display that shows your phone’s settings, contacts, call history, and more.
Touchscreens can also be used with some of RingCentral’s other features, such as video conferencing, team messaging, and online meetings.

Prices for DaaS phones available from RingCentral start at $4 per month for the Yealink T33G desk phone with a 2.4” colour display and go up to $43 per month for the Poly Trio C60 conference phone with a 5” colour screen.

Currently, RingCentral DaaS is only available to US customers, but it will soon be made available to its international customers as well.

RingCentral is not the only believer in DaaS, Insight’s Director of Product Management and Customer Success, Brian Gatke, told UC Today that DaaS has paved the way for the adoption of bring your own device (BYOD).

Jonathan Harris, Chief Strategy Officer at Aura also affirmed the DaaS strategy, telling UC Today that it helps future-proof companies and offers more than a traditional device refresh.
