Cisco Acquires Splunk to Bolster Cybersecurity Offerings in Age of AI

Cisco has acquired the cybersecurity and observability business Splunk to strengthen its security offerings in the age of AI.

The acquisition, valued at roughly $28 billion, complements Splunk’s track record of helping businesses improve their digital resilience and Cisco’s strategy of equipping its customers and partners with the most advanced levels of security for their business.

The collaboration between Cisco and Splunk, both established leaders in security and observability, also aims to leverage their expertise in AI to create next-gen solutions for businesses to become more secure and resilient.

Chuck Robbins, Chair and CEO of Cisco, commented:

We’re excited to bring Cisco and Splunk together. Our combined capabilities will drive the next generation of AI-enabled security and observability. From threat detection and response to threat prediction and prevention, we will help make organizations of all sizes more secure and resilient.”

The acquisition addresses the importance of securely using and storing the vast volumes of data critical to businesses in 2023. Cisco and Splunk also cite the extra complexities of the “acceleration and adoption of generative AI, expanding threat surfaces, and multiple cloud environments” as developing a landscape different to anything organizations have previously faced.

Splunk’s security capabilities complement Cisco’s existing portfolio to mutually offer advanced security analytics and coverage from devices to applications to clouds to help businesses improve their digital resiliency even further.

Cisco and Splunk also mention that their expertise and AI experience means they are “well-positioned” to ensure customers responsibly leverage AI in their own systems because of both businesses’ “scale, visibility into data, and foundation of trust”.

In the announcement, Cisco and Splunk promise more significant investments in new solutions, accelerated innovation, and a grander global scale.

“Uniting with Cisco represents the next phase of Splunk’s growth journey, accelerating our mission to help organizations worldwide become more resilient while delivering immediate and compelling value to our shareholders,” said Gary Steele, President and CEO of Splunk.

After the acquisition closes, Steele will join Cisco’s Executive Leadership Team, reporting to Robbins.

“Together, we will form a global security and observability leader that harnesses the power of data and AI to deliver excellent customer outcomes and transform the industry,” Steele continued. “We’re thrilled to join forces with a long-time and trusted partner that shares our passion for innovation and world-class customer experience, and we expect our community of Splunk employees will benefit from even greater opportunities as we bring together two respected and purpose-driven organizations.”
