Webex and AT&T Evolve Hybrid Work with Converged UC-Mobility Offering

Webex Go with AT&T is now available to order, giving enterprises a converged mobility and unified communications solution that can help enable successful hybrid working.

The service, also known as – AT&T Cloud Voice with Webex Go – sees the Webex platform combined with AT&T’s 5G network to provide users with a virtually seamless experience as they move between devices and locations.

Webex Go with AT&T arrives in the market at a time of unprecedented change with the explosion of hybrid and work-from-anywhere models. Employees are becoming more mobile and want user friendly tools that allow them to work smarter from the location of their choice.

From a technology perspective, this has huge consequences. Employees want the same work experience wherever they’re working on a given day, and they also want to use devices they’re familiar with, particularly smartphones.

With Webex Go with AT&T, gone are the days of having a separate number for your mobile, Webex app, and desk phone. A user’s AT&T business mobile number is there caller ID for all devices, meaning they can make and receive calls through both the Webex app, Webex Devices and native smartphone dialers.

Speaking as the service launched at Cisco’s flagship WebexOne event last month, Doug Jones, AVP of Product Management at AT&T highlighted a range of features that make the offering unique in the market.

To provide users with a great experience, two aspects are in place. Firstly, the voice will be transmitted over AT&T’s wireless network, helping provide high-quality voice on 5G-enabled business mobile phones. Secondly, there will be a preferential quality of service provision for Webex Go application data, which will help deliver a consistent and clean mobile user experience, especially during times of network congestion.

“We’ve worked hard to make sure we roll out something that is different to anything else in the marketplace,” Jones said. “There are many unique and exciting things we’ve developed together.”

The Age of Hybrid Work

The latest market research supports the need for a modern mobility solution like Webex Go. A report from Cavell Group, commissioned by AT&T, found that there was around one million mobile-enabled cloud communications users in the US at the end of 2022. However, this is expected to rocket to 7.3 million by 2027, demonstrating demand from users.

The report stated that existing technology used by enterprises to deliver such flexibility to employees is often subpar.

“Despite the ability to use fixed-line communications on mobile devices being available for years, the solution has only recently become advanced enough to provide a viable solution to enterprises,” it read.

“This developed into an over-the-top UC app for voice and video. However, these apps would generally require Wi-Fi connectivity as cellular connectivity was not able to handle the bandwidth requirement.

“Cavell Group’s latest industry survey revealed that most providers still only offer mobility solutions using a softphone client or a separate app that can struggle when running over the top of a cellular network.”

Webex Go eradicates this issue by combining the Webex Calling service with AT&T’s network, making it one of the few providers extending its service beyond an over-the-top application.

This empowers employees with the flexibility they’re demanding. For example, it might mean working from a coffee shop in the morning, primarily on their phone, before moving to the office in the afternoon and wanting a richer experience with a laptop and desk phone.

The benefits extend well beyond Webex Calling, too. For example, call history and voicemail are unified in the Webex App. Presence is also synchronized across all applications and devices, including smartphone native dialers, and users can easily transfer to other Webex devices mid-call, or elevate the call to a meeting in the Webex App to enjoy the fully immersive collaboration experience that Webex offers.

Users can also enjoy enterprise-grade calling features like extension calling, integrated phonebook, call accounting codes and more.

Security From the Ground Up

The integration of UC and mobility offers enhanced security and compliance features for businesses such as compliance call recording all managed via the Webex Control Hub.

By using Webex Go with AT&T, all calls are now logged in the Webex platform, regardless of their origin or destination, offering improved security and compliance. Previously, this would have only been the case for calls made via the UC application.

Likewise, call recording is extended across all calls and devices.

Speaking at WebexOne, Amey Parandekar, Vice President of Webex Calling Product Management at Cisco, teased further innovation with AT&T over the coming months and into 2024.

“This is the start of a fantastic relationship; I can only envision building on this to deliver more on the overall collaboration and alliance with AT&T,” he said.
