Global RCS Market to Almost Quadruple in Value By 2031

The global Rich Communications Services (RCS) market is set to almost quadruple in value by 2031.

According to a new study by technology consultancy firm Skyquest, the RCS market will grow from $8.5 Billion in 2023 to $31 Billion by 2031.

The RCS market encompasses advanced messaging services that surpass the limitations of traditional SMS text messaging. RCS empowers users to send multimedia messages, engage in group discussions, exchange high-fidelity images and videos, and explore a series of interactive functionalities.

Skyquest suggests that the global RCS market’s potential growth will be driven by the demand for “more engaging and interactive communication experiences”.

Skyquest’s report wrote:

The Global Rich communication services Market is expected to experience significant growth during the forecast period from 2023 to 2030(…) The market is driven by the increasing demand for enhanced communication experiences, improved customer engagement, and the growing adoption of smartphones.”

The businesses Skyquest considered prominent RCS players encompass mobile network operators, technology providers, and communication service providers, including AT&T, Deutsche Telecom, Google, Vodafone, Orange, Samsung, Verizon, Tata Communications and Ericsson.

“The competition in the market is driven by factors such as product innovation, strategic partnerships, and expanding market presence,” Skyquest explained.

Possibly the most critical reason why RCS is set to explode over the next few years is Apple’s decision to enable RCS messaging on iPhones. This decision was made last November after pressure from Google and Samsung. Complementing rather than replacing iMessage, the iPhone supporting RCS might result in functionality for features such as typing indicators, encryption, high-quality images and videos and encrypted messaging when communicating between iPhone and Android devices.

The Market Trends, Drivers and Restraints

RCS is set to enhance the customer experience by offering richer messaging capabilities. Skyquest highlights that rich media content, including images, videos, and interactive elements, is increasingly pivotal within RCS messaging. The capacity to exchange such content in real time boosts communication by creating a more captivating and immersive experience. This evolving trend also presents fresh avenues for businesses to showcase their products and services through visually compelling content.

Integrating AI tech within RCS services, such as virtual assistants and chatbots, is another critical trend. Incorporating AI-powered chatbots allows businesses to streamline customer interactions, offering instantaneous support and tailored recommendations. This integration elevates the overall customer experience and bolsters operational efficiency.

These trends underline a critical market driver behind RCS’s likely growth — the growing demand for advanced customer experience.

Businesses are recognising the importance of personalised communication. RCS offers advanced messaging features like interactive buttons, carousels, and suggested replies, enabling dynamic engagement. This boosts brand loyalty and conversion rates. Various industries, including retail, e-commerce, and banking, use RCS to enhance customer communication.

Another key market driver that Skyquest credits is increasing smartphone adoption, meaning the usage of RCS has grown in tandem. There is a projected surge in demand for the advanced communication capabilities provided by RCS, including multimedia messaging, group chats, and file sharing. This trend is particularly pronounced in emerging economies such as India and China, where rising smartphone penetration fuels the appetite for RCS services.

The market restraints that Skyquest purports include limited interoperability. Standardisation and collaboration among industry players are crucial for seamless communication across networks and devices, and without interoperability, RCS adoption may be hindered, undermining its potential growth.

Another challenge is the data and privacy concerns raised by RCS’s proliferation. As sensitive information is increasingly exchanged via RCS, data privacy and security become paramount. Safeguarding user data is essential to foster trust among users and businesses. Any breaches or privacy issues can impede the adoption of RCS services.

“While challenges exist in terms of compatibility and data privacy, the market holds opportunities for businesses to improve customer engagement and capitalise on the growing demand for advanced messaging services,” the report added.
